Panniers Repair Project..

Post by EasyRider »

There is not a "Project" section on here. So i thought i would put this thread in the "Tips & Tricks" section.

So when i bought my new to me R1250RT last week, i knew the panniers were scratched. Luckly only the black plastic part and not the bike colour painted part. The painted part has the protection film on which i will replace as it is marked.
I will add photos and comments of what and how i have been doing it and what i've used.

So here is a photo of each pannier showing the scratches that need repairing.
As you can see, the right pannier has the worst scratches on it.

So to repair the scratches to get ready for paint, i will be using these items.

800 grit wet/dry
Fine scotch pad (grey)
Big Boy Plastic filler

Panel wipe and lint free cloth

So it does not take me long once i get going.
Both the left and right pannier covers are now ready to mask up and paint.
The left pannier did not need any plastic filler.
The high build primer will sort any small marks out.
The right pannier did need some plastic filler.
I always put more on than i need. This way its hard to miss any deep marks.
I also used a blade on the right pannier to remover any high plastic from the scratches.
Will add photos of what i will use to paint them in the next post.

So to paint the plastic part of the panniers you must use a plastic primer.
I use a 1K clear primer whenever i paint unpainter ABS plastic.
I will then use a high build primer (Black) which will hide any little mark left in the plastic.
For the top colour coat, I use a 2K Satin Black.
I like satin paint on black plastics as it look better than matt, and its not as shiny as gloss.
I could colour code them to match the bike.

Be careful with those chrome trims as they're only held on by the automotive equivalent of double sided self adhesive tape. I lost one the once, cost over £50 for just one!

Both panniers are now primed in black 2K primer and sanded flat with 800 grit wet/dry.
I then used the grey scotch pad to get in to all the corners.
Getting the inner corners is a must, as that is where the paint could start to lift away.
I am now waiting for the touch up paint to come to see if its the right colour.
If it is i will reprime both panniers with a light grey 2K primer.
If not i will just paint them black, but will put a gloss clearcoat on.
The 2K gloss clearcoat will help with any stone chips. as it's easy to touch up the clearcoat.

Here is a photo of each pannier front. The first photo is of the one that had the most damage.

The panniers are now finished. :yay:
I have painted them in 2k Satin Black.
Both panniers have had 4 coats.
The panniers are now back together.
I am very happy with how they have turned out.
The paint and everything i used was free as i had it left over from other jobs.
The 2 times i was down the workshop painting, has cost me £4.40 in electric.
I will add another photo when the panniers are fitted back on the bike.
