So it’s finally happened. Despite fairly regular cleaning and copious amounts of protector - the paint on my engine has given up the ghost and started to crack/chip/otherwise fall off.
Does anyone have any recommendations as to which paint is best to do the touch up with, and also, do I need a laquer or anything on top of it?
Dry sand the affected spot, then rust converter. Warm the paint and area to be painted (not hot, just nice sunny day warm!) VHT silver / aluminium engine paint won't be too obvious. As it's a small area, I'd spray the paint into the lid and dab it on with a brush. One very light coat then a thicker coat 15 - 30 minutes later, as it's going off.
No need to lacquer it. I would use a 2k lacquer anywhere carbs or fuel taps can leak. I find ethanol seems to lift and dissolve aftermarket engine paint, but 2k clear is resistant.
When it's fully dry (24hrs) it might be worth blasting it with a hair dryer for 10 minutes to help it cure further. Running it will do it.
Sod’s Law is it’s in about the least accessible place it could end up being! And how I’m going to get the paint ‘sunny day’ temperature at this time of year is probably an even bigger puzzle than getting at the rusted bit itself, lol.
