Top case not color matched?

Post by carpedatum »

Test ride pending, I am hopeful of becoming a fellow R1200RT rider quite soon, and joining you all here on a regular basis! I am getting quotes from dealers on a 2016 model, and got a response today regarding the top box that I found puzzling.  "...the top case, which is only available in white aluminum..." I like the bike in San Marino Blue and am confused - BMW doesn't offer that pricy top box as color matched to the bike?  Anybody know?

This is the way BMW have done business for years. A dealer can usually get the topbox colour matched to the bike for around £200, or you can take it to your local car body shop.
As if the box wasn't expensive enough ......

If they produced the box in every colour the price would be even more.  Their policy seems to be if a bike comes with a top box as standard it does match, but there is only one of them and it's not an RT.

Mine is also the San Marino Blue and I got mine sprayed at my local car bodyshop, I stripped the lid and took just the shell so saved on that, £100  ;)

I painted mine myself and it turned out really well. For about $60 you can get a spray can of color matched paint and clear from colorite.com.  I disassembled the top, making the painting job a lot easier.  The hardest part is wet sanding the clear coat, but that step is optional.

Nice work!  Thanks for sharing those photos, and thanks, everyone, for the feedback.  I once used a Colorite kit on a Givi top-box, on my last bike, so may go that route.  Will share the results if I do.
