I was born with nothing and unfortunately I still have most of it left.

As normal, mine downloads for 2 minutes then fails.  Solution is to download the whole thing which then overrides the out of date installed one.  It remembers the units and takes all of 3 minutes to complete.

My maps are also out of date.  I'm always really nervous about updating them - so much to go wrong and 99%+ of the new version is bound to be the same as the old one.

Am I right to be cautious?

Just do it.  Even if you wipe all the maps they will re install.

I'm cautious as well and the risk is greatest if you update at the last minute before leaving. I have just updated to City Navigator 2017.30 and will not update again still after the summer holidays are over. If a new road gets opened in the meantime, I'm sure I will cope.

I cannot understand why some folks get excited by updates to Garmin Express.
