Dealer wants $3,200.00 for parts and $600 for three hours labor.
No way.
My local mechanic will attempt if I order the shaft drive we've talked about here.
Fingers crossed... Here's hoping my guy can do it!

well, the dealer wouldn't give me the estimate unless I agreed to the work.
It may be more than just a new shaft drive, but I'll find out from my mechanic. My Mechanic looked up the hours to bill for replacing just the shaft, and it was three. Since the Dealer wanted to bill only three, I can infer it's just the shaft.
I hope it's just the shaft drive.

I've explained to my guy that $1500 is my limit.
After that, I will google a vehicle Junk Yard and have it delivered there!

Wonder what that will cost? I really hope to keep it. It's still a dream bike to me.

Hopefully, the new shaft drive will arrive tomorrow.

I say "new", but I presume these are "reconditioned" shaft drives. I doubt anyone is pouring molten steel to make new ones!

I'll keep things updated, IF anyone cares to follow the story... I'll keep it up even if no one does... :-)

No real update. I'm pretty sure my mechanic has both bike and replacement shaft drive. I try not to bother mechanics. If they want to talk, they'll call!

I will be offering up parts from it before I send it to the junk yard... if it comes to that. 'Seems a waste to just chuck it. The seats, saddle bags, and top box are in near-new shape, and I'm not looking to make money. I hope it doesn't come to that.

Never sold anything online, and I read from "Stu" that scammers are afoot! I'll check with him and admins when/IF the time comes ....

Keep smiling and hoping! :-)

BeemerShop reports that UPS delivered to my mechanic.
If I know James A., he'll be spending the weekend with his family. He's a good man that way. Maybe late next week?

I can't say enough good things about BeemerShop. They seem to be a class act.... and they didn't pay for me to say that. :-)

No repair update yet, but....

The good folks at BeemerShop.com did remind me they also sell the parts that bracket the ShaftDrive in the power train.

I don't know for sure, but I'ma guessing that stuff is wrecked as well.
Here's hoping I'm wrong. :-)

No update on shaft drive. Mechanic has it and hasn't communicated yet.

Just for reference, there is a website called
TheBikeBuyers.com
That will buy your motorcycle when it becomes a wreck like mine did!

All they wanted was the VIN and a couple photos. They even show up at your location and tow the thing away.

They've offered a few hundred US dollars for my r1200rt even with an exploded shaft drive. It will be a relief to get rid of it.

Don't know what will replace my current Yamaha FJR, but whatever it is will have a shaft drive...

I like those too much to give up on them entirely.

I don't like to pester mechanics, but I emailed and asked...
It's scheduled for next week...so wait...wait..wait...

The more research I do, the worse it seems. I have found NO ONE who burned up a shaft and then had it replaced without the extra $3000 paid to replace the things the shaft connects to.
That's a deal breaker for me.
I'd rather save 3K for another purchase. Probably another FJR.
Once bitten twice shy!

Funniest quote I found

Then you really can't afford a used one."

How many of those you have seen was taken in to a dealer? Probably all of them

The dealer will replace everything probably because 90 percent of owners will pay it.

I have also seen similar failures on FJR's including the dreaded rear suspension linkage failure.

Am I right in thinking that yours is a high mileage bike? If so then you should be expecting problems no matter what manufacturer it is

Sorry. I'm not doing my best to stay positive.
Thank you, Stu. It may well be that a new shaft is all it requires.

My third bike, my trek 5200 (US Postal)... Still works. :-)
I've put over 10K miles on that... But the engine that drives it is getting old and sluggish!
